The human patient simulator (HPS) has recently been introduced as an adjunct technology in nursing education. An international survey of nursing schools and simulation centers that collaborate with nursing schools and have purchased a Medical Education Technologies, Inc. (METI) HPS was undertaken in 2002. Thirty-four schools of nursing (18 based in universities and 16 based in community college...

BACKGROUND This pilot study describes an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) developed using Human Patient Simulation (HPS). METHODS Eight residents completed two iterations of this HPS OSCE containing seven stations and utilizing checklists, global ratings, and scoring sheets. RESULTS The first- and second-year residents scored similarly with mean scores of 64/104 and 62/123, ...

OBJECTIVES To determine the effectiveness and student acceptance of using a human patient simulation (HPS) training module focused on interdisciplinary teamwork skills. DESIGN During their second-professional year, all pharmacy students were in enrolled in Principles of Pharmacotherapy 4: Cardiovascular Diseases and Patient Care Lab IV, a problem-based learning course. As part of the patient ...

BACKGROUND Neurosurgical trainees regularly encounter critical care situations. Traditionally, education was accomplished through lecture and experience. Increasingly, human patient simulators (HPS) are employed, allowing trainees to sharpen skills in a safe and realistic environment. We describe our experience using HPS in neurosurgical training. METHODS We developed a critical care training...

Significant differences between animal and human pharmacokinetics may be responsible for the conflicting results of experimental studies. This study determined the impact of human pharmacokinetic simulation (HPS) on gentamicin activity in an Enterococcus faecalis endocarditis model. The decrease in bacterial counts was greater with HPS than with a dose-equivalent regimen without HPS.

INTRODUCTION One of the newest teaching modalities in health education is the use of human patient simulators (HPS). A simulation scenario creates a software program vignette in which nursing, medical, and other students interact with a manikin to practice caring for patients in a risk-free environment. Although used extensively in schools of nursing, there is little research that examines if t...

An evaluation was conducted of perceptions of practicing Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) toward use of simulation for initial certification, continuing education, and recertification. The hypothesis was that a 1-day simulation experience would improve their perceptions toward simulation use. The first phase developed content-valid questions to examine CRNAs' perceptions toward s...
